From Discouraged to Empowered—Wendy’s Story

Patient Symptoms

Wendy* originally presented in 2013 with a complex health picture of chronic symptoms across many different body systems. She was originally diagnosed with Lyme and Bartonella, was successfully treated, and was not seen for several years following her treatment.

However, when she did return, she reported worsening symptoms. A return of some of her previous joint pain, and new ailments including bloating, gas, and alternating diarrhea as well as constipation. She also noted increased cognitive impairment, forgetfulness, and heart palpitations during this time. Wendy was concerned that she was having a relapse of her Lyme disease and tickborne infections.

Wendy’s comprehensive lab results revealed yeast and candida, and she tested positive for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). Although Wendy had a history of Lyme and Bartonella, this time, Dr. Schweig suspected an imbalance in her gut, possibly as a downstream effect of the previous rounds of antibiotics. After a Functional Medicine Deep Dive, he decided a comprehensive gut protocol was necessary.

Our Approach

Wendy began an herbal protocol with pre- and probiotics to decrease gut inflammation and begin restoring her gastrointestinal microbial balance. She was also placed on a SIBO protocol and cardiovascular support. Wendy soon noticed huge improvements to her gut symptoms, cognitive function, and energy levels. Her MSQ significantly decreased from 56 to 17, and her Lyme symptom tracking questionnaire score improved from 57 down to 5.

Finally, Out of the Fog

Wendy can now report she is feeling “very good” and celebrates that she is free of the flu-like syndrome she previously suffered from. She said, “I feel like a normal, healthy person.”

This case is important in illustrating the importance of proper diagnosis and treatment of gut imbalances in all patients, but especially those with Lyme and tickborne infections.

Comprehensive gastrointestinal diagnosis and treatment protocols are vital in helping the immune system to function optimally, and for decreasing inflammation. Treating the gut allows for faster and deeper recovery, as well as a lower risk of relapse from a wide range of conditions.
